Back Pain While Chiropractic care is most commonly thought of as helping with back pain, it is by no means the only health problem chiropractic is successful at helping people with. Of course, back pain is definitely a serious problem for our country. It is responsible for the greatest amount of lost work time, doctor’s visits and inability to perform daily activities of living. Therefore it is quite important that we discuss how chiropractic can help you with your back pain.
Over the past several years we have seen an alarming increase in the number of opiate medications being prescribed to Americans suffering with back pain. The resultant addiction to these drugs and the tens of thousands of deaths each year they cause have become a national crisis, garnering the attention of the President of United States and the U.S. Attorney General.
As terrible as addiction is, there are other problems associated with opiate drugs. One of those problems is that the opiates, like anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants, simply DO NOT WORK. Don’t misunderstand me – opiates are powerful drugs and will kill pain BUT they do nothing to change why someone has back pain. The reason why is that back pain is almost always a mechanical problem resulting from a bone in the spine (a vertebra) being out of place, causing nervous system irritation (what chiropractors call a subluxation) which then results in pain. No drug in the world is going to cause a bone to change position. In other words, it is impossible to fix a mechanical problem using a chemical.
Another problem is that because the opiates do not fix the reason why someone has back pain, the problem gets worse. Eventually the problem can become so bad and hurt so much that the person resorts to back surgery. Unfortunately back surgery has a terrible track record in helping with back pain and after the surgery guess where the patient winds up. That’s right – back on opiate drugs.
Fortunately there is really great news! We have an overabundance of research and clinical data that proves that chiropractic works better on back pain than drug therapy (or acupuncture, or physical therapy, or massage, or exercise) and is, of course far, far safer than drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic adjustments are safe, effective and often provide quick results.

Neck Pain As technology becomes a bigger and bigger part of lives more and more people find themselves suffering with neck pain and stiffness. Why is this? Well, just look at anyone, man, woman or child, who is using a digital device. Are they standing straight up with their shoulders back and their head erect? Probably not. As a matter of fact they are probably flexed forward with their shoulders stooped over, their back hunched and their head forward.
What else can cause neck pain? One of the most common reasons for chronic neck pain in adults is a car accident that happened and either never was treated or only was treated as long as the case was open. On average every American will be in an automobile accident every 10 years. Automobile accidents are far more damaging to the human neck and back than we have been allowed to realize. A car accident is literally thousands of pounds of metal traveling at 20, 30, 40 or more miles per hour suddenly crashing to a stop, with you inside – that’s a lot of force going into your neck. It doesn’t matter if you have pain at the time of the accident. It ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS causes neck damage and it can take years before any symptoms show up.
Another cause for chronic or sudden onset neck pain is a fall that at the time did not cause neck pain but was hard enough to result in a broken bone or a strain/sprain to ligaments. Just like the automobile accidents referred to above, damage done by these accidents accumulates and the person will experience pain and spasm months or years later. This is why you’ll hear people who suffer from repeated and chronic neck problems explain their health issues away by saying that they “slept wrong” or “caught a draft in their neck” or “moved the wrong way”. None of these reasons is correct or make any sense and repeating them over and over and doing nothing to change what is wrong only allows the problem to grow more serious.
Drugs, both prescription and over the counter, are frequently used to kill the pain, but, as we said when we spoke about back pain, spine problems – including the neck – are mechanical problems and they will not be changed by using chemicals. This includes muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and opiate medications. It also includes any number of balms or crèmes or other rubs that cannot change the mechanical problems causing neck pain.
Decades of clinical data and research prove that chiropractic care is the best, fastest and safest way to handle neck pain and stiffness. This is because chiropractic adjustments handle the cause of the symptoms and do not simply cover the symptom up with drugs or crèmes or salves.
At Krieger Health Solutions we use digital technology to help us determine the cause of your pain and to help us make sure we are providing the best, most efficient care we can. So if you or someone you know is suffering with neck pain, please call us to schedule a free consultation.
Headaches and Migraines Whether you have tension or sinus or migraine headaches you will find that chiropractic adjustments and functional nutrition can help immensely. Not because we treat the headache itself but because we take the time to find out WHY you are suffering from these headaches and what we will need to do to help you back to normal function again.
Ironically migraines can be brought about by an overuse of medication taken for headaches!
Chiropractic adjustments, while not a specific treatment for headaches of any type, have been proven repeatedly to be an invaluable asset for those suffering from them. It has been proven that upwards of 90% of all tension headaches, for instance, are caused by misaligned vertebrae or subluxations, which cause nerve irritation resulting in spasm of the muscles of the upper neck and skull which then causes a tension headache. Sinus headaches can likewise be triggered by irritated nerves resulting from subluxations, which then result in sinus dysfunction causing a painful amount of pressure to build up in the sinuses. As the common causation for tension and sinus headaches is irritated nerves due to misaligned vertebrae or subluxations, chiropractic adjustments, which correct subluxations, have been proven to be invaluable to headache sufferers.
Migraine headaches likewise are largely the result of subluxations that cause nerve irritation and altered blood flow and therefore also have a great response to chiropractic adjustments. Because they can have multiple causative factors, migraines, more often than the other types of headaches, can also require functional nutrition in order to be corrected. A large part of the migraine is inflammation, which can be greatly reduced through the proper use of diet and supplementation. Sometimes in addition to using x-rays to see the subluxations, migraine sufferers will need blood work or other lab analysis to determine what functional or metabolic problems may be contributing to their problem.
